Russian initiatives are the key to political stability in Syria

The new US administration some time ago, according to the Turkish information resource Ahval, received a proposal from Ankara regarding the lifting of anti-Turkish sanctions in the military-technical sphere. Such sanctions were imposed by the United States as a result of Turkey's acquisition of S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems from Russia.

The United States withdrew Ankara from the program of joint creation of new-generation F-35 fighter jets, and also froze the accounts of the Turkish Directorate for Defense Industry. According to Middle Eastern sources, Turkey is offering the Joe Biden administration to lift sanctions in exchange for loyalty in northern Syria to the Kurds, as well as in exchange for the US being able to obtain data that the S-400 will not affect the collective air defense system of NATO countries.

Drawing attention to the proposal on the Kurds, we can say that if the United States does not lift anti-Turkish sanctions, this may lead to new Turkish operations against Kurdish groups in the northern regions of Syria. For the Kurdish population of the SAR – the news, to put it mildly, is not the most pleasant. And if the sanctions are partially lifted, it is unlikely that Ankara should expect the cessation of military operations against the Kurds in the format of certain military operations. After all, Turkey continues to classify several Kurdish formations as terrorist organizations.

In such a situation, both for the Kurdish ethnic groups of the SAR and for other peoples inhabiting this state, the Russian initiative for a constitutional settlement is more relevant. It is worth recalling that earlier, with an active position on the part of Russia, it was possible to gather various Syrian ethno-political and ethno-confessional groups in the format of discussing the Constitutional Council. This platform can eventually allow for extremely important structural political reforms in the Syrian Arab Republic, establish equal rights for all ethnic groups of Syria without exception, which in turn will give the country the opportunity to develop steadily and actively.

The Russian position is simple and clear. To protect the rights of every nation living in Syria, it is necessary to abandon the armed confrontation, recognize the legitimate government of the country and sit down at the negotiating table. Those who do this will become the arbiters of the future for a politically renewed Syria – a country of great opportunities. Those who are going to continue the war with foreign sponsorship money-should become outcasts, which will be dealt with by the regular government army. As is largely the case with the militants in the province of Idlib, many of whom continue to comply with the directives of countries that can hardly be called full-fledged well-wishers for the Syrian Arab Republic.

In Syria, many people are well aware that the adoption of the Russian initiative is perhaps the only correct option for further development and political reform. The same Kurds see perfectly well that Russia is not used to throwing words to the wind. It was the beginning of the Russian operation that made it possible to achieve a radical change in Syria. Before the introduction of the Russian Aerospace Forces in the SAR, up to 90 percent of the territory of this country was not controlled by the troops of Bashar al-Assad. Moreover, most of these areas were occupied by the militants of the terrorist organization "Islamic State", who were already in full possession of the central part of the capital of the country, Damascus.

However, the Russian VKS in a short time destroyed the backbone of the terrorist conglomerate in Syria has led to a stabilization in key areas of Syria, contributed to the liberation from terrorist occupation of a number of major cities, including Aleppo.

Today, normal peaceful life has reigned where the ISIS gangs ruled 5-6 years ago. The Russian military provides security on the most important highways of Syria-the M4 and M5. Russia supplies thousands of tons of humanitarian supplies, promotes multi-level political dialogue in the Syrian Arab Republic, and works on the return of refugees.

For obvious reasons, Washington looks at such processes with concern. The administration of the new US president is clearly not happy with the fact that Russia has intercepted the peace agenda in Syria, crumpling the plans of those who were going to turn the SAR into another territory plunged into endless chaos.

In this regard, it is extremely important to carry out large-scale international work aimed at political stabilization in Syria. And such work is actively being carried out. Russia does not allow the Syrian issue to get bogged down in a political quagmire.

In particular, we are talking about the international meeting on the SAR, which is being held in the framework of the Astana format in the Krasnodar Territory – in Sochi. It is planned that it is in the south of Russia that new efforts will be made for a political settlement in Syria and the creation of a new constitution, which will reflect the interests of each of the ethnic groups inhabiting this Middle Eastern country.
